Bout of Books 23 | Sign Up & TBR

,

Hola all, coming at you today with a sign up and TBR post for yet another readathon. I am obviously still participating in the month-long NEWTs Readathon, but it just so happens that the next round of Bout of Books is this week and it would be rude to neglect one in favour of the other, so I guess this TBR also functions as an idea of the books I hope to read this week for my NEWTs!

For those unaware of the delight that is the Bout of Books readathon, the organisers have a handy blurb available to clue you in:

bob23The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, August 26th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 23 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I don’t have much planned for this week and though I’m very sure work will be quite busy, my social engagements are next to non-existent, which makes for good quality reading time. If nothing else, Bout of Books is well and truly low-key and low pressure and I like that kind of readathon, I can get onboard with that. So let’s take a look at my TBR, shall we?

TBR

  1. The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
I started this a few days ago and didn’t get very far at all as I wasn’t feeling too well. I think I’m going to restart it and try to really dive into the story. It’s not too long at all and the illustrations and cover are beautiful so hopefully it will win me over really easily.
  2. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye [audiobook]
Last week I managed to get through quite a lot of this on audiobook whilst doing data input at work. Work has since gotten busier with tasks that require more brain power so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to listen to this or not, but fingers crossed I’ll sneak in the remainder of this book. It’s ok, I’m not blown away admittedly, but I wonder how much of that is that I’m listening to it on audio and the narrator is just ok rather than anything spectacular or engaging.
  3. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
I feel like a lot of book bloggers have read this one already. I haven’t read Uprooted and I never did finish Temeraire either (whoops) so I’ve never successfully finished a Naomi Novik book. Maybe this one will be the first? I’ve heard only great things about it, the cover is GORGEOUS, I got an eARC of it (that then didn’t download onto my Kindle so I had to wait until it was released and retroactively review it), and I need to read this before next week anyway because it’s due back to the library. All of those motivations seem like good ones to pick this up sooner rather than later.
  4. Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Yes I’m re-reading the Six of Crows duology yet again. The reason? I wanted to, plain and simple. I can’t stop/won’t stop when it comes to this series, even though it’s a long book to pick for a readathon and I really should have been more sensible. I can’t help it though, I just love this gang of little criminals so much.
  5. The Elder Edda
I’ve always been a fan of mythology, specifically Greek mythology, and I’m not too badly versed on it, but I’ve never properly branched out into other cultures’ myths and legends. I’m amazed I haven’t yet read the Edda because I enjoy some contemporary loose retellings of Norse mythology (and the MCU’s version, obviously) so I really should get on this. I’m excited to read something completely different!

That’s it, that’s what I want to read in this week. If I even get a couple of these finished I’ll be a very happy reader, but I’m hoping to absolutely smash this TBR. As ever, you can keep updated with how I’m doing in my Twitter updates thread, otherwise you can find me curled up in my armchair, reading up a storm (hopefully).

Are you participating in Bout of Books this week? Are you a seasoned Bout of Book-er or is it your first readathon? Let’s cheer each other on! Or, if you’re not participating, what are you planning to read next? Let me know in the comments and let’s chat books and reading.

  1. The Girl of Ink and Stars is such a gorgeous read and I also adore Crooked Kingdom! Great choices. I’m not participating but I would definitely like to do Bout of Books one day! I’m trying to finish up some NEWTs reads. Good luck with both readathons!

    • I didn’t think it was possible to adore Crooked Kingdom anymore but this re-read is well and truly proving that this is definitely one of my favourite series of all time. :) I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into The Girl of Ink and Stars because it’s been sitting, looking pretty, on my shelves for SO long and I’ve just been waiting for “the right time” (whenever that is) to start it.

Thanks for the well wishes and best of luck to you for the remainder of the NEWTs!
